Primary immune deficiency. Andy's defense system does not
work properly. Primary immonodeficiency affects as many as 1 million
Americans and 10 million worldwide (Source Jeffrey Modell Foundation)
How will he be cured?
Early diagnosis and treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency
is essential to prevent the recurring infections from doing permanent
damage. Unfortunately, the lack of unique symptoms causes these diseases to
resemble a great number of other illnesses. Thus, families and doctors are
often unaware that the troubling conditions they are dealing with are
actully rooted in a defect of the immune system.
Andy may be cured with a bone marrow transplant that will
help substitute his immune system. Or with genetic theraphy that may
substitute his immune system cells.
How many people have Andy's disease?
Nobody knows for sure how many people have primary immune
deficiencies because its very difficult to diagnose. Primary
immonodeficiency affects as many as 1 million Americans and 10 million
worldwide (Source Jeffrey Modell Foundation)
Does Andy have AIDS or HIV?
No, Andy does not have AIDS or HIV. He has problems with
his immune system but not related to the AIDS virus. Primary Immune
Deficiency is very different from Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS) and they
should not be confused with each other. Although both involve the immune
system, Primary Immunodeficiency is genetic, or "built into" a person's body
by their genes. AIDS, on the other hand, is acquired by becoming infected by
the HIV virus.
